Coal company idles local mine: Parent firm filed for bankruptcy protection last week

A subsidiary of AEI Resources Inc. has idled its Princess Beverly mine at Cabin Creek mainly because of a weak market but partly due to the overweight coal truck issue, a company spokesman said this morning.

Terry Whitt, a vice president for West Virginia-Indiana Coal Holding Co. Inc., said the company laid off 68 of the mine's 80 employees Tuesday.

"With the mild winter that we had, power plants aren't burning any coal. There's a lot of coal on the ground," he said.

At the same time, the company is worried about how the coal truck issue will play out in the state Legislature, he said. Princess Beverly relies exclusively on trucks to get its coal to the Lady Dunn ...
