"We can't teach our kids if they're not in the classroom."
That has been Gov. Bob Wise's mantra as he pushes the Legislature
to approve a bill that would financially penalize schools that don't
provide 180-days of class.
The truancy diversion social work program is successful in
improving students' attendance in 85 percent of cases, according to
the Children's Alliance, which implements the program.
Social workers from the truancy diversion program work with kids
in 49 counties to make sure they are in the classroom.
The $8 million program is set to lose all state funding at the end
