A price difference of more than $1,500 a night may keep some local arts organizations from performing at the Clay Center.

With much higher rental prices than the Civic Center's facilities, many nonprofit organizations may not afford a move to the Clay Center - at least not on a permanent basis.

The Charleston Ballet, the Light Opera Guild or Kanawha Players, for example, may stick with cheaper facilities like the Municipal Auditorium or the Little Theatre for most shows.

"I think most of the arts groups will look at (the Clay Center) for special performances," said Paul Helfrich, the executive director of the symphony and Clay Center performing arts program manager.
