To understand the Big East Conference's sense of accomplishment,
one has to recall the past.
The time was early in the winter of 1997 and the first day of
1998. This was the end of the 1997 season - no doubt the low point of
Big East Conference football.
Gator Bowl - North Carolina 42, Virginia Tech 3. Fiesta Bowl -
Kansas State 35, Syracuse 18. Liberty Bowl - Southern Mississippi 41,
Pittsburgh 7; Carquest Bowl - Georgia Tech 35, West Virginia
University 30.
Then add the facts that probation-saddled, scholarship-limited
Miami finished 5-6 and Boston College, rebuilding in its first season
under Coach Tom O'Brien, was 4-7.
