Article: Municipal Auditorium set to receive a major facelift

In the world of Charleston performance halls, the Municipal Auditorium has been cast in the long shadow of the attention- grabbing $86 million Clay Center.

But the 3,483-seat Municipal Auditorium is getting ready to undergo a possible $4 million to $5 million facelift that will allow it to carve out a niche among performance groups that don't want to shell out big bucks to book the Clay Center, officials say.

The renovation work will include aesthetic changes and technical improvements, Civic Center Manager John Robertson said.

Mayor Jay Goldman said the money for renovations would come from the city's municipal budget, but donations from some art aficionados might lessen ...
