DETROIT - Waiting and watching has helped Chad Pennington throw and win.

Pennington threw a career-high four touchdowns as the New York Jets beat the Detroit Lion 31-14 on Sunday to reach .500 with their third straight win, and fourth in five games.

Pennington, the first quarterback taken in the 2000 draft, played in just three games and threw 25 passes during his first two seasons as Vinny Testaverde's backup.

"Being able to sit for two years allows you to learn what the NFL is all about without being thrown in the fire," said Pennington, who was 21-of-26 for 229 yards with one interception.
