Article: Property sale won't slow stadium: Ballpark plans can move ahead before Watt Powell is sold

Charleston's ballpark proposal no longer depends on the immediate sale of Watt Powell Park, as City Council eliminated the provision intended to shield the city's liability in the $23 million project.

The 11th-hour amendment, city officials say, was forced by the state's slow movement in giving out the project's $12 million economic development grant, without which the new ballpark and the Alley Cats are both gone.

Aside from the state grant, the sale of Watt Powell was the only major obstacle in the path to beginning construction on the new stadium.

At Monday night's council meeting, it was removed.
