Article: Former governor Barron dies: West Virginia's 26th chief executive served prison term for bribery

Former Gov. William Wallace Barron, whose scandal-plagued administration resulted in jail terms for several top officials, has died in North Carolina at the age of 90.

Barron served as governor from 1961 to 1965 and was the first West Virginia governor to go to jail.

Barron died Tuesday at the Carolinas Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Opal Wilcox Barron; daughters, Mary Penn, Nancy Smith (Ronald), and Jane Anderson; seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Heritage Funeral Home, Matthews/Weddington Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

A spokesman at the funeral home said all arrangements and burial will be private.
