The wind farms springing up in the Allegheny highlands probably never will sell much electricity in West Virginia, and, without a significant advance in technology, it's unlikely that wind farms will spread to other parts of the state.

Despite their seeming isolation, however, the wind farms have a statewide impact.

Wind farm owners will receive millions annually in state tax breaks once their windmills are operating, and the electricity they sell will somewhat compete with coal-fired electricity and the jobs it supports.

While wind farms don't emit pollution, they raise other environmental and aesthetic concerns that have caused a schism in the state's environmental community.
