Article: Bill targets misconduct by school board members, Proposal would punish officials for exceeding authority

School board members could end up behind bars for wrongful conduct under a bill being considered by lawmakers.

The bill, which has already passed the House Education Committee and has been sent to the Judiciary Committee, would impose a fine of up to $1,000 and 30 days of jail time for county school board members who act outside the scope of their authority.

"We need to rein in some of these renegade board members and make them realize they're part of a board," said Delegate David Perry, D- Fayette, the lead sponsor of the bill. "They can't be out acting on their own and making deals."
