Article: Delaware investigates Legionnaires' disease

DOVER, Del. - Delaware's Division of Public Health is investigating 12 cases of Legionnaires' disease, including two fatalities, in the state between May 29 and July 5.

The cases do not appear to be linked, but they are part of an increase in Legionnaires' disease across the south Atlantic region this year, according to a statement from the agency.

Legionnaires' disease is a form of pneumonia caused by bacteria. People contract the illness after having inhaled mists from an infected water source, such as cooling towers and evaporative condensers of large air conditioning systems, whirlpool spas and showers.
