Article: Big East basketball needs Irish

The Big East Conference's future continues to rumble like a summer thunderstorm. The only thing the league knows about its future to date is that talk is cheap. Or, it's cheaper than whatever is about to come down. The not-so-whispered desire of the Big East football schools to break with the basketball-based partners remains a goal. Whether it happens may depend on how deep into their pockets the pigskin half-dozen decide to dig.

Sources in the league say the Providence Five do not want a divorce. They want to continue playing Syracuse and Connecticut - to name last season's NCAA champ and the team projected early to win the 2004 title.
