Article: City bowling alley open since 1940 shutting down

One of Charleston's two bowling alleys, Boulevard Recreation Center near the Patrick Street Bridge, is shutting down.

The 24-lane alley, which also has pool tables and a small arcade, has been open since 1940 and is home to some 700 league bowlers. Although it's not clear when the doors will be closed, Manager Joe Rizzo said it probably will be within a matter of weeks.

The Schoenbaum family, which owns the property, decided not to renew the bowling alley's lease, Rizzo said.

That left patrons of the bowling alley mourning the loss of their frequent hangout. A petition is circulating at the alley imploring someone to save it.
