The best move the Big East Conference made was the one it didn't
make.
With apologies to five additions - at $2 million apiece - that
will have 16-team Big East hoops soaring higher than the overhead
scoreboard at Madison Square Garden, the conference's expansionists
wisely decided Big East football is better with fewer.
Yes, eight is enough.
On a Tuesday when the Big East made the obvious official and
announced expansion for 2005-06, a decision on a potential football-
only member wasn't tabled.
It was floored.
The additions of Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette and
South Florida will make basketball boffo, but the move to not have a
ninth football school could do as much for ...
