ONE member of the McDowell County Board of Education, interviewed
by Charles Owens of the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, called it a "four-
day war for the Free State of McDowell."
The kids won.
The credit for that goes to politically courageous adults who
acted with record speed to do the right thing.
The McDowell County school system has not downsized to keep pace
with the decline in population. The county has been unable to keep
its schools in good condition. Big Creek High School is down to 266
students.
In 2001, citing numerous violations of state standards, the state
Department of Education took over the McDowell school system and sent
in an interim superintendent.
He came up with a $61 ...
