Democrat Joe Manchin has begun his television advertising campaign, joining foe Lloyd Jackson on the airwaves in what promises to be a very expensive two-month backstretch in the primary election.

With upbeat music humming in the background, Manchin's folksy debut TV ad provided the obligatory biographical sketch: his West Virginia roots, family and career as a small businessman and politician.

While Manchin and Jackson begin saturating TV airwaves, challenger Jim Lees is putting together a low-tech campaign on the cheap. He's sticking fliers in newspapers across the state asking for money, volunteers and seeking to portray himself as the underdog against entrenched politicians.
