The U.S. Department of Justice's requirement that Alcan Inc. sell
the aluminum rolling mill in Ravenswood is flawed, unnecessary and
contrary to the public interest, Gov. Bob Wise said.
As part of a proposal announced in September that allowed Alcan to
buy Pechiney SA, the Justice Department's Antitrust Division said
Alcan couldn't keep the Ravenswood mill. The department said the
plant would give Alcan too much of the brazing sheet market in North
America.
The department's requirement that Alcan sell the plant "severely
threatens our economy and places at severe risk the jobs of hundreds
of Ravenswood plant employees and the future welfare of hundreds of
