HUNTINGTON - The Cabell County Commission has slashed thousands of
dollars in donations it had made for years to seven volunteer fire
departments in the area. The county commissioners cited costs related
to the new Western Regional Jail for depleting the $139,000 given to
the county's fire departments this fiscal year. Counties pay the
state to house their inmates at regional jails.
A county budget for 2004-2005 approved last month removed all
funding for the fire departments, leaving firefighters looking to a
levy on May's ballot to fill the budget hole. The three-year levy
