Yesterday, you could see Elm Street as Elm Street truly is, main
drag of an old mill town whose mills are but redbrick memories. The
sky was low and dark, the air thick and wet and heavy, a hole in the
world where the noise had been.
Storefront windows lately teeming with star-spangled posters
heralding would-be presidents were empty again, dirty with remnants
of old masking tape. Street corners that, just hours earlier, were
overflowing with ardent supporters of this or that candidate, this
or that cause, were nearly deserted, as before.
