Of all the municipalities in Kanawha County smaller than
Charleston, South Charleston pays the best salaries to its department
heads. Those salaries are generally one-third to one-half better than
those for comparable positions in the next largest city, St. Albans,
even though South Charlestons population is only about 15 percent
larger. For example, South Charlestons police chief earns $48,493,
while the chief in St. Albans earns $36,306. Likewise, the fire chief
salaries are $53,875 in South Charleston and $36,306 in St. Albans,
and public works director salaries are $56,569 in South Charleston
