Article: Video lottery casino raises ire: Kanawha City business goes next to zoning board

A neon "open" sign hanging by the door of a video lottery casino at the former Risk's 35th Street Market is turned off, and city officials and Kanawha City residents hope to make that permanent.

More than 60 people crowded into a meeting room at the Kanawha City Community Center Thursday to discuss ways to prevent the casino from opening, something they thought they had done three months earlier.

In April, the Hot Spot Lounge & Cafe was denied its lottery license because it was in violation of a new city ordinance that refused new gambling establishments to open within 2,000 feet of another. But Hot Spot operators filed suit and won, and the business again plans to open.
