Barry Diller, the pioneering Hollywood mogul who cobbled
together a fourth television network despite the skepticism of the
TV establishment, stunned the entertainment world yesterday by
resigning as chairman of the Fox network and the 20th Century Fox
studio.
Diller's brainchild, the five-year-old Fox network, has
succeeded by attracting young, upscale viewers favored by
advertisers. It has launched such hits as "The Simpsons," "In Living
Color," "Married ... With Children" and "Beverly Hills 90210," which
are now carried on 138 affiliated stations.
Diller, who said he wants to start his own company, is the only
executive in Hollywood with dominion over a movie studio and a TV ...
