Luxury accommodations aren't usually associated with river barges,
but RiverBarge Excursions has successfully put the two together.
The New Orleans-based company brought about 175 tourists into the
Charleston area Saturday aboard its River Explorer. Built on two
barges, the LaSalle and Desoto, the River Explorer is essentially a
floating 590-foot-long, 54-foot-wide luxury hotel with 98 staterooms.
Each stateroom has 200 square-feet of space.
The hotel also has a library, lobby, dining area and theater.
James Maxim of Cuba, N.Y., said he and his wife, Jeannette, spent
the two days doing everything from taking a tour of Beckley's
Exhibition Coal Mine to riding the tram at ...
