Article: Sheriff-elect picks brother for chief deputy position: Hardy says he will vote against it because he opposes nepotism

Sheriff-elect Mike Rutherford will present Kanawha County commissioners Wednesday with the name of his brother, Capt. Johnny Rutherford, for appointment as his chief law enforcement deputy.

But Commissioner Dave Hardy said today he would vote against it.

"I have the utmost respect for Mike Rutherford and for Johnny Rutherford, but I don't agree with nepotism at the courthouse in this situation," Hardy said. "I think that's a bad practice. It's rarely done in the private sector."

A four-person selection committee set up last week to review candidates for the position independently of the sheriff-elect recommended Johnny Rutherford on Monday.
