Article: State may pick up the tab for Guard members' insurance: Bill to be introduced on Tuesday would cover life insurance for members

Members of the West Virginia National Guard would have their life insurance premiums covered by the state under a bill to be introduced in the Legislature Tuesday.

Sen. John Unger's bill would set aside an initial $1.2 million in a Service Members' Life Insurance Reimbursement Fund so that no guard members would forego taking out life insurance offered by the military, as some do now.

"It's a small price to pay to ensure that all members have life insurance," he said.

The monthly insurance premiums are $16.25 but some members, especially those at low pay grades, decline it. If those members are then killed in Iraq or elsewhere, their dependents are deprived of benefits of ...
