"There are none left. They're certainly somewhere, but for the
moment, the only thing we can observe is that they're not here,"
says police spokesman Jean-Marc Ledoux, peering beyond his massive
mustache into the darkened emptiness of the Bois de Boulogne.
Can this be? Paris without prostitutes? This is like
Washington without the Monument. It's unexpected.
But it's true. Mayor Jacques Chirac's Operation Health Bois de
Boulogne has rid the capital's largest park of a key tourist
attraction, the 500 or so mostly transvestite prostitutes who worked
there.
Concerned about the spread of AIDS among the transvestites,
many of whom are drug users and nearly all of whom are South
American, ...
