Article: State ready to distribute next round of school clothing vouchers

Nearly 57,000 vouchers

State officials are poised to distribute thousands of school clothing vouchers worth $150 each to needy students in West Virginia.

Though Gov. Bob Wise last year cut the vouchers to balance the budget and then reinstated them after a surplus in November, this year's vouchers mirror the amount to which Gov. Cecil Underwood raised it in 1999.

The nearly 57,000 vouchers will cost the state about $8 million, said John Law, spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Resources.

"The governor particularly wants to give kids this opportunity to get new clothes for school," Law said. "It's a new adventure and you want to be dressed for it."
