CLEVELAND - No, Fred Holdridge isn't looking for an errant golf shot in downtown Columbus, Ohio.

The 81-year-old just prefers using his golf cart for trips into that city.

"I'm in it right now, in the heart of downtown," he said from his cell phone.

Golf carts are being used for far more than playing 18 holes. Campers, boaters and folks with big yards use them to get around. They're useful on construction sites or at large manufacturing plants.

And, recreationally, brave drivers like Holdridge are even venturing out onto public roads, which has posed problems for communities struggling to regulate such low-speed and often vulnerable vehicles.
