Article: Town battles to ban trucks on federal highway: Berkeley Springs officials, residents say trucks harmful to town known for tourism

BERKELEY SPRINGS - Four decades ago, when someone made a movie about this small West Virginia town for a time capsule, the highway had the starring role.

"It was a 20-minute film, and at least half the time was traffic on U.S. 522 - and particularly truck traffic," says Beth Curtin, director of the Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. "The community in 1963 was thrilled and very proud because it meant prosperity.

"Now ... well, perceptions change."

Today, some people have had enough.

In a sleepy town of 700 where only 13 voters showed up for local elections two years ago, hundreds have united to try to ban trucks from the federal highway that cuts through their community.
