Thomas F. Connell's Feb. 16 Close to Home article on how the
availability of guns contributes to violence in the District
contained two truisms: First, murderers and other violent criminals
are generally not deterred by the prospect of incarceration (of any
duration). Second, if the only means to kill someone were a rope, a
blunt instrument or human hands, the murder rate would decline
rapidly.
However, regarding Mr. Connell's first point, it seems clear
that the termination of violent crime would best be served by
permanently removing violent criminals from society. The Post's Feb.
