Crystal Sutphin knows better than most how hard it can be to dig yourself out of poverty and a bad situation.

A caseworker for the state Department of Health and Human Resources in Boone County, Sutphin readily offers that she once was the one asking for help.

"I've come a long way," she said. "I've been here eight years and before that I was on the other side of the desk."

It's a perspective that gives her unique sympathy for her clients.
