Article: Bill boosts number of school nurses, Funding positions will be a challenge, advocates say

The number of school nurses in elementary through high schools would increase under a bill being considered in the state Senate's health committee.

In particular, the bill would require a specific number of school nurses for older students. Up to now, there has been no required ratio for students in grades 8 through 12.

"In the past, people perceived, and incorrectly, that school nurses were more needed with younger kids. But now we have so many special needs and at-risk students at the secondary level, and sometimes they have greater needs than the younger students," said Brenda Isaac, lead school nurse for Kanawha County Schools.
