Article: Coal company buys Maryland mine

International Coal Group Inc. says it has significantly expanded its Maryland production by acquiring the surface mining operations of the Barton Mining Co. in Allegany County.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ICG, based in Ashland, Ky., expects the Barton mine to produce about 500,000 tons of bituminous coal annually, spokesman Charles Snavely said Monday. That would nearly match the output of ICG's Vindex Douglas mine in Garrett County, which produced about 606,000 tons in 2005, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

The Barton mine has been idle in recent weeks but production is expected to resume by Saturday, ICG said.
