FOUL ball. Unnecessary roughness. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Negative sports metaphors are too easy to reel off.

The majority of West Virginia public schools voted to exclude private schools from tournaments that select state champions in football, basketball, baseball and other high school activities.

On April 4, a majority of public school members of the body that regulates inter-scholastic athletics voted to place all 14 of their private school colleagues - including seven Roman Catholic and five other Christian institutions - into a single, segregated class for post-season competition in all sports.
