Flowers are springing up in gardens, porches, baskets and even
some unexpected places, like MacCorkle Avenue in Kanawha City.
The project to plant flowers in the median between lanes of
MacCorkle Avenue is part of a bigger effort to beautify Kanawha City.
"Maybe people won't be as apt to litter a garden as they would a
stretch of grass," said Bill Shanklin, the city of Charleston's
assistant director of public grounds. "Charleston is the heartland of
Almost Heaven, West Virginia; it needs to be kept pretty."
MacCorkle Avenue actually is a state right of way, but limited
manpower and money restrict the amount of work the Division of
Highways can accomplish.
