U.S. officials said yesterday they are taking seriously the
claim that a radical Lebanese group was behind Tuesday's devastating
bomb attack on the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires and are concerned
that further attacks may be forthcoming.
While making no final judgments about who planned or executed
the blast, officials said the claim of responsibility by Islamic
Jihad issued in Beirut was being taken at face value. The statement
said the bombing was in retaliation for a Feb. 16 helicopter gunship
attack by Israel which killed Sheik Abbas Musawi, secretary-general
of Hezbollah, a fundamentalist Shiite Muslim group; his wife; their
son, 6, and five bodyguards.
