The Kanawha County Commission wants to prevent the parks and recreation department from laying off workers by reinstating $200,000 it cut from the department's operating budget.

"If we don't restore their funds, they are going to have to let some people go," said County Commission President Kent Carper. "When you look at the cost of operating the park system, it's better to spend money now because it will cost us later."

The commission will decide on the matter at its regular meeting on Thursday.

This recent decision came after a commission review of the department's finances showed it could not thrive with a cut this fiscal year.
