Stung but not surprised by former California governor Edmund G.
"Jerry" Brown Jr.'s victory in the Connecticut primary, the campaign
of Bill Clinton acknowledged tonight that the imperative to defeat
Brown in the April 7 New York primary will slow Clinton's efforts to
engage President Bush as an equal.
Instead, Clinton will be forced to focus more energy here and
less on the fall campaign. And the Clinton camp knows it will be
fighting on difficult terrain in New York, known for tough politics
and a fierce press that could prove particularly troublesome if it
dwells on stories questioning Clinton's integrity.
