It seems that Parkersburg South has become the designated spoiler
for Kanawha County girls' sports teams.
For the last four years, the Patriots have knocked off highly
ranked Capital in the basketball regionals.
Now, for a second straight season, South has toppled the top
softball squad in the county and highest-ranked team in the state
that was still alive in the postseason.
On Thursday, the Patriots rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 3-
1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Dragons responded with two
runs to tie it in the top of the seventh, but then looked on
helplessly as South scored the game winner in the bottom of the
inning.
