Article: Our views: Pay off the debts at Kanawha parks; Selling Sandy Brae Golf Course should solve funding problems

TAXPAYERS subsidize the Kanawha County parks and recreation department to the tune of $1 million a year. That is a great deal of money.

While it is impractical to expect the department to operate without help from taxpayers, parks and recreation officials should work to reduce that subsidy.

The sale of the Sandy Brae Golf Course could greatly reduce the size of the subsidy needed to maintain the parks and recreation system.

Scott Pierson, the owner of Pipe Plus Inc., a St. Albans utility contracting firm, had the winning bid for Sandy Brae at a recent auction. Pierson said he will keep it open as a golf course.
