IT IS possible to prattle and pontificate about the cultural
relevance of the cheap romance novel, and how its development, like,
totally reflects the changes to women's status in society. But why
would you want to do that when you can just have a laugh at the
covers?
A new book, The Look Of Love, which compiles some of the best
cover art from the Forties to the Eighties, will make you laugh so
hard your bodice rips and Chardonnay shoots down your nose. The
accompanying text by Jennifer McKnight-Trontz makes a worthy stab at
placing all this kitschery in a historical context, but really the
Look Of Love is eye candy that'll make you think twice about buying
the new Danielle Steele.
