Last summer, Edinburgh Castle hosted a concert where the most melodically inventive band in the world supported the least. Those bands were the Beach Boys and Status Quo. I don't have to say which was which, do I?

It wasn't the real Beach Boys, of course. Of the original band, only Mike Love is left. Al Jardine has a rival Beach Boys-playing group, Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983 and cancer claimed his brother Carl in 1997. The third Wilson, Brian, effectively left the band in the early 1980s, a victim of band politics and mental health problems.
