Article: Blatter re-election could force World Cup breakaway

THE prospect of a breakaway World Cup is being mooted in some European football circles and could move a step closer if Fifa president Sepp Blatter is re-elected in May and attempts to effect changes which would weaken the influence of football's most powerful continent.

There is already a poisonous atmosphere between Blatter and many in the Uefa hierarchy, including president Lennart Johansson. Those who oppose Blatter fear he will reintroduce his proposal for a World Cup every two years, while simul-taneously attempting to cut the number of European nations in the finals and reduce the number of Uefa delegates on Fifa's 24-man executive committee.
