Article: McEwan's still best buy says S&N chairman

SCOTTISH & Newcastle still believes its McEwan's brand has a long- term future, despite the Edinburgh-based brewer placing increasing emphasis on its five "drive" beer brands - John Smith's, Foster's, Kronenbourg, Miller and Becks - according to chairman Brian Stewart.

Speaking at the firm's annual results meeting in London, and to illustrate its strength in the marketplace, Stewart showed how Scottish Courage's top five brands in the UK market are increasingly squeezing out the firm's more regional brands. The top five brands' share of SC's UK sales has grown from 47% in 1996 to 83% this year.
