I. Introduction
"[A]ll men are created equal"1 are the enduring words of the Declaration of Independence that have echoed throughout the history of the United States and have remained the foundation of American society. Unfortunately for women, at the time of the writing of the Declaration, the words "all men" were narrowly construed by lawmakers, as women were denied legal, political, and economic rights and had little independence.2 This discrimination was evident within all the American colonies, including Georgia.3
