Article: Where American diets fall short, supplements make up the difference

In case you hadn't guessed it from recent newspaper headlines, Amy F. Subar, Ph.D. from the National Cancer Institute is now telling you: Americans don't eat enough fruits and vegetables. Her telephone survey of 2,811 adults determined that the average American eats only 3.6 servings of fruits and veggies a day - even when fried potatoes, salads drenched with dressing, and fruit juices are included!

Only 23 percent of the population achieved the recommended five-a-day fruit and vegetable intake. The groups found to be doing particularly poorly at the dinner table were men, smokers, younger people, and those in lower income brackets.
