The Clatsop County government issued the following news release:
The Clatsop County Sheriff's Office urges residents to be alert to mail and Internet fraud, after receiving several reports of both in recent months.
"While these scams are not new, they're often repackaged in a new format," Detective Dan Johnston said.
In a recent case, a person received a letter that included a check purported to be an advance of sweepstakes winnings. The letter advised the recipient to cash the check and send the money back to cover fees and taxes. Upon receiving the money, the sender would send the winnings.
