Article: Square footage standard changes

In April, the National Association of Home Builders' Research Center led the way in the adoption of a voluntary, longoverdue national standard for the measurement and calculation of floor area sizes in single-family homes.

This new standard identifies and reconciles many before unresolved issuesboth technical and political-for almost everyone associated with housing throughout the United States. In and of itself, the standard is sound, although it has some marketing and communication problems that need to be addressed for those appraisers and lenders electing to use and rely on this standard.
