Lincoln Center Festival 96

Proposition: The ideal arts festival focuses entirely on a single artist or topic-as opposed to a big bunch of unrelated events assembled with no purpose other than to fit into a convenient schedule. If so, Lincoln Center got at least halfway to paradise with its recently concluded Festival 96. Festival director John Rockwell's three crammed weeks of orchestral concerts, opera, chamber music, dance, drama, and video lacked one all-unifying idea, but there were several intra- and interdisciplinary bondings.
