Kinship care has become an increasingly used and favored option for children in need of placement. Child welfare workers need to be trained on strategies and techniques for developing helping relationships within extended family systems to support intrafamilial child placements. Workers also need to be skilled in systematic assessment, using approaches based on ecological systems and strengths techniques. This article reviews a case management approach that is competency based and designed to assist child welfare staff members in working effectively with relatives as foster parents.
